Orcas Island Water Activities

Paddle out and have fun with a self-guided tour or with an experienced tour guide and outfitter with kayaking in Orcas Island. Luckily, Orcas Island is a perfect spot for beginners with calm and protected waters as well as more than 125 miles of shoreline. Up on the North Shore, you can access marine parks like Sucia, Matia, and Patos. You can also head inland toward Moran State Park and kayak on Cascade Lake or Mountain Lake.

Going with a tour group can be beneficial as they provide the gear and equipment as well as a safety lesson before taking you out onto the water. We recommend Outer Island Excursions for our guests. They offer full-day or three-hour guided kayak trips.

Learn to expertly navigate the waters around the island and keep your eyes open for the wildlife that calls the San Juan Islands home, like orca whales (May through September), seals and sea lions, otters, eagles, shore birds, and tons of marine life including starfish, sea urchins, and anemones.

We highly recommend taking plenty of water and sun protection like sunscreen and sunglasses or a hat for your Orcas Island kayaking adventure.
